Nine years after the first Jupiter mission ended in disaster, the United States and the Soviet Union stand on the edge of nuclear war. Even so, a joint crew launches: the spacecraft Leonov carries Americans and Russians out to the abandoned Discovery. Dr. Heywood Floyd (Roy Scheider) has to find out what doomed the original flight and why the onboard computer HAL 9000 turned on its crew. Getting answers means waking up a machine that has already killed once.
Hyams adapted the screenplay from Arthur C. Clarke's own follow-up novel, and unlike Kubrick's enigmatic original, this film actually answers the questions left hanging in 1968. The cast includes John Lithgow, Helen Mirren and Bob Balaban. Stream 2010 (1984) online on iFILM.
