Daughter Sarah balances the company with a failing marriage, Kevin navigates his career and an openly gay relationship, conservative pundit Kitty gets tangled in Washington politics, youngest son Justin comes home from war carrying damage he can't name, and Tommy wants what he was promised. Each sibling's crisis bleeds into the others.

The show ran for five seasons on ABC without dipping into soap opera territory — a tricky balance it managed by letting the cast do the heavy lifting.
