Synopsis
Three Kings (1999) is a war action film laced with black comedy that you can watch online on iFILM. David O. Russell directs George Clooney, Mark Wahlberg, Ice Cube and filmmaker Spike Jonze. Southern Iraq, late February 1991: the shooting has just stopped, and the soldiers don't quite know what to do with themselves.
A folded map turns up hidden inside a captured Iraqi prisoner. It points to a bunker where Saddam's men stashed gold looted out of Kuwait. Captain Archie Gates pulls three men together and slips into the desert after an easy score. Half a day's work, in theory. What they find instead are civilians who rose up against Saddam and were left to die, and a heist that curdles into a choice: grab the bullion, or get living people out alive.
Russell didn't make a victory-lap movie. He made a sour, funny attack on the way a faraway war gets packaged for television. The harsh color grading, blown-out sun and a jolting shot from inside a body as a bullet hits looked daring even by late-'90s standards, and the film has aged into a cult favorite.
