Synopsis
Manhattan (1979) is Woody Allen's comedy-drama you can watch online on iFILM. Shot in black and white, it's a film about New York, romance, and people who talk about love far better than they manage to hold onto it.
Isaac is a forty-two-year-old TV writer who quits the job he hates. He's dating seventeen-year-old Tracy (Mariel Hemingway), but things tangle when he falls for Mary, his best friend's mistress. Diane Keaton plays her: sharp-tongued, over-read, never quite sure of anything. Around them circle Isaac's ex-wife, who's writing a brutal book about their marriage, and a crowd of Manhattan intellectuals with an opinion on everything. A young Meryl Streep turns up early in the cast.
Cinematographer Gordon Willis filmed the city like a love letter: skylines set to Gershwin, the bridge at dawn, rooftops at first light. Allen mocks his characters and forgives them in the same breath, and the ending hands you a question instead of an answer. Stream Manhattan (1979) online on iFILM.
