Margaret Tate (Bullock) runs a New York publishing house like a minor dictatorship. When her work visa gets revoked and deportation to Canada looms, she gives her assistant Andrew Paxton (Reynolds) a choice: marry her or they both lose their jobs. He agrees — with conditions. The deal sends them to Andrew's family home in Alaska, where everything that could go wrong does, starting with Grandma Annie (Betty White, utterly scene-stealing) and ending somewhere near a dock in the rain.
