The story follows the dive-bomber crews and the code-breakers who cracked Japan's radio traffic. Lieutenant Dick Best (Ed Skrein) throws his plane into a near-vertical dive through a wall of flak. Admiral Chester Nimitz (Woody Harrelson) and pilot Wade McClusky (Luke Evans) gamble everything while badly outgunned in carriers. Patrick Wilson plays intelligence officer Edwin Layton; Dennis Quaid and Aaron Eckhart round out the command. On the Japanese side stand Tadanobu Asano and Etsushi Toyokawa.

Emmerich spent the better part of a decade chasing this project, then shaped it as a chronicle of four days that flipped the Pacific war: four enemy carriers went down near one tiny atoll.
