Synopsis
If Beale Street Could Talk (2018) is Barry Jenkins' romantic drama you can watch online on iFILM. Early-1970s Harlem: Tish and Fonny have loved each other since childhood, and now a baby is on the way. So is a trial. Fonny sits in jail for a crime he didn't commit.
Tish (KiKi Layne) is nineteen, pregnant, and up against a system that finds it easier to keep a Black man locked up than to chase the real culprit. Her mother Sharon (Regina King) flies to Puerto Rico to track down the only witness who can clear his name. Fonny (Stephan James), a sculptor who dreamed of his own studio, now counts the days until a child he may never hold as a free man. Brian Tyree Henry, Pedro Pascal and Diego Luna fill out the supporting roles.
The film adapts James Baldwin's 1974 novel, directed by the same Jenkins behind Moonlight. Regina King won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress, and cinematographer James Laxton bathes Harlem in a warm, almost touchable glow. This isn't a thriller about breaking someone out of prison; it's a story about love holding its ground. Stream If Beale Street Could Talk (2018) online on iFILM.
