Starship C-57D travels to Altair IV to learn the fate of an expedition that vanished two decades earlier. Commander Adams (an early role for Leslie Nielsen) finds only two survivors: the philologist Dr. Morbius (Walter Pidgeon) and his daughter Altaira, raised her whole life away from other people. Morbius wants the visitors gone and won't say what killed the rest of the colony. On their first night, an unseen force begins tearing crew members apart.

The story loosely reworks Shakespeare's The Tempest, casting Morbius, his daughter and the loyal Robby the Robot as a spacefaring Prospero, Miranda and Ariel. It was the first feature scored entirely with electronic sound, and it fed directly into the imagination behind Star Trek. Robby became an instant genre icon.
