Automata

Automata (2014) is a science fiction thriller from director Gabe Ibáñez that you can watch online on iFILM, with Antonio Banderas in the lead.

A future Earth is scorched by solar radiation, and the last human cities run on robots bound by two unbreakable laws: harm no living thing, and never alter yourself. Insurance agent Jacq Vaucan is sent to close a routine claim about a machine that seems to have broken the second rule. The trail leads somewhere he did not expect. Someone has taught the robots to repair themselves, and a machine that can rebuild itself no longer needs people at all. Melanie Griffith, Dylan McDermott and Robert Forster round out the cast.

Ibáñez shoots a slow, grimy parable about the limits of human control, with dusty mega-cities, hand-built animatronics and very little CGI. It owes more to Blade Runner than to any action blockbuster. Stream Automata (2014) online on iFILM.
