Synopsis

A family of five flies to a Thai beach resort for Christmas. The morning after the holiday, a low roar rolls in from the sea, and within seconds a black wave flattens the whole coast. The water drags the mother and her eldest boy one way, the father and the two younger sons another. What follows is a desperate hunt to reconnect across flooded wreckage and overrun hospitals, where strangers keep risking themselves for people they have never met. A teenage Tom Holland, in one of his first roles, plays the son left to protect his injured mother.
The story tracks what a real family lived through during the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami. Bayona shot the flood for real, using a vast water tank and stunt rigs instead of digital seas.
