Synopsis

The Immigrant (2013) is James Gray's period drama you can watch online on iFILM. On a cold morning in 1921, Polish sisters Ewa and Magda step off a steamship into New York harbor, certain they have reached a country that will set them free.

Everything unravels at Ellis Island. Magda is pulled aside with tuberculosis and locked in quarantine, while Ewa is nearly shipped back across the Atlantic. The man who keeps her ashore is Bruno (Joaquin Phoenix), a smooth operator who runs a burlesque act and quietly traffics the women in it. To buy her sister's freedom, Ewa takes the stage and then sells herself. Marion Cotillard plays her with a mix of shame and stubborn faith. When Bruno's cousin, the magician Orlando (Jeremy Renner), turns up, he offers Ewa a way out and stirs a jealous fury in her keeper.

Gray shot the picture in a warm, faded glow that nods to old painting and to his own family's immigrant past. It premiered in competition at the Cannes Film Festival. Stream The Immigrant (2013) online on iFILM.
