Empire of Light

Hilary runs the front of house. She greets guests, tears tickets and moves through the day on the rhythm of the screenings, all while quietly fighting a mental illness she keeps hidden. When Stephen, a young Black man, joins the staff, a careful tenderness grows between them. But this is Thatcher's Britain in a season of racial unrest, and their bond proves far more fragile than either of them expects.

Olivia Colman leads, with Micheal Ward beside her and Colin Firth and Toby Jones in support, the latter as an old projectionist devoted to celluloid. Roger Deakins shot the film and Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross wrote the score.
