Hiding out in the sleepy town of Green Hills, Sonic misses having friends and lets loose one night, sending a burst of energy across the power grid. That slip-up blows his cover. Enter Dr. Robotnik, an unhinged genius who wants to crack Sonic open and harvest his limitless speed. The local sheriff, Tom Wachowski, ends up dragged into the chase, and the two race across the country to stay ahead of the doctor. James Marsden plays Tom, Ben Schwartz voices Sonic, and Jim Carrey chews every scene as Robotnik like it's 1996 again.

The film beat its box-office expectations and spun off a whole franchise. Its production became its own legend too: after fans tore apart the first design, animators rebuilt the character from scratch, and the redo paid off.
