The Paper Chase

The Paper Chase (1973) is a drama directed by James Bridges — watch it online on iFILM. Timothy Bottoms plays Hart, a first-year Harvard Law student who lands in the contract law class of Professor Kingsfield. Kingsfield, played by John Houseman, runs his classroom like a controlled demolition: Socratic grilling, no mercy, and a talent for making grown adults feel like they know nothing. Houseman won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for the role.

Hart survives on library coffee and sheer nerve. He also starts seeing Susan — played by Lindsay Wagner — without knowing she is Kingsfield's daughter. The professor is aware of everything and says nothing, which is somehow worse.

James Bridges wrote the script from John Jay Osborn Jr.'s novel, and the film still holds up as the most accurate portrait of what elite law school does to a person — not the legal education itself, but the identity it quietly dismantles.
