A Scottish general is told by three strange figures that the crown will be his. The idea takes root, his ambitious wife pushes him the rest of the way, and Macbeth kills the king to seize the throne. From there one crime feeds the next, paranoia spreads, and the power he grabbed starts to rot from inside. Bertie Carvel, Brendan Gleeson and Corey Hawkins fill out a court where no one can be trusted.

Coen shot it on bare soundstages drenched in German Expressionist shadow — sharp angles, fog, geometry instead of castles. Kathryn Hunter plays all three witches at once, twisting her body into something birdlike and unearthly.
