Synopsis

A Serious Man (2009) is a Coen brothers tragicomedy you can watch online on iFILM. The year is 1967, the setting a Jewish suburb in the American Midwest, and physics professor Larry Gopnik's ordinary life is quietly falling apart.

His wife wants a divorce so she can marry a smug family friend. His kids skim cash from his wallet, his deadbeat brother has colonised the couch, and someone is mailing poison-pen letters that threaten his tenure. Larry goes looking for meaning from three rabbis, but no one can tell him what he did to deserve any of it. Michael Stuhlbarg plays a man who only ever tried to do the right thing.

Joel and Ethan Coen made their most personal film here, drawing on their own Minnesota childhood and framing it with a Yiddish folk tale. It earned Oscar nominations for Best Picture and Best Original Screenplay, pairing dry Coen humour with an ending people still argue about. Stream A Serious Man (2009) online on iFILM.
