Synopsis
Only God Forgives (2013) is Nicolas Winding Refn's crime thriller, and you can watch it online on iFILM. Ryan Gosling stars as Julian, an American who runs a Bangkok boxing club that hides his family's drug trade.
When Julian's brother is killed after butchering a young prostitute, their mother flies in from the States. Crystal (Kristin Scott Thomas) is a poised, venomous crime boss who wants blood and does not care who is guilty. Standing in the way is Chang, a soft-spoken retired cop who carries a sword and metes out punishment his colleagues treat as gospel. The city glows neon red, and the violence arrives slowly, almost calmly.
Refn made the film right after Drive, reuniting with Gosling but stripping his character of nearly all dialogue. Cliff Martinez scored it, and cinematographer Larry Smith drowned every frame in feverish light. Cannes split over it, half walking out, half mesmerized.
