The Soviets have built a fighter jet that radar can't see and that responds to the pilot's own thoughts. The West fears it could tip the balance into a first strike. So they send Mitchell Gant, a burned-out Vietnam veteran who speaks Russian, deep behind the Iron Curtain. His job sounds simple and is anything but: slip past the KGB, reach a guarded airfield, and steal the plane. Then fly something no one outside Moscow has ever flown.

The film runs in two gears. The first half is all tension and disguise as Gant moves through Moscow; the second turns into a supersonic chase across the Arctic.
