Ray handles brutal jobs with the same calm he brings to school pickups and pub nights. His daughter needs him around. His girlfriend doesn't know what he does for money. His best mate does — and tries not to think about it. The series never asks you to root for a hero or condemn a villain. It just puts a complicated man in ordinary situations and lets the tension do the work. Scott Ryan's performance is understated to the point of being unsettling.
