About

Synopsis

The Seafarers (1953) is a short documentary you can watch online on iFILM — Stanley Kubrick's first color film, commissioned at age 25 by the Seafarers International Union's Atlantic and Gulf Coast District. Runtime: 29 minutes.

Shot on location inside union facilities, it follows the daily rhythms of maritime workers: engine rooms, cafeteria lines, union hall meetings. Narrator Don Hollenbeck delivers the institutional pitch. The film was presumed lost for decades until a print surfaced in 1973 and was preserved by the Library of Congress.

As a commercial job it was never meant to outlast its brief, but it survives as a direct document of Kubrick learning to direct real space and real people — before Fear and Desire, before anything else. Stream The Seafarers (1953) on iFILM.
