About

Synopsis

The Truce (La tregua, 1997) is a war drama directed by Francesco Rosi that you can watch online on iFILM. It adapts Primo Levi's memoir of the same name: liberated from Auschwitz by Soviet troops in January 1945, an Italian survivor begins the long, circuitous journey back to Turin through a Europe where the fighting has stopped but nothing else has settled.

John Turturro plays Primo with quiet precision. The route home bends through Poland, Belarus and Germany — not by design, but because that's how displaced Europe worked in 1945. Along the way he picks up other former prisoners, refugees, black-market traders and Soviet soldiers. Rade Šerbedžija plays one of the travelling companions. The tagline says it plainly: a group of men got lost on their way home and changed everyone they met.

Rosi keeps the film spare and deliberate. There are no cathartic speeches, no tidy resolutions. What stays with you is the particular texture of recovery — the small negotiations, the unexpected kindnesses, the weight of having survived. Stream The Truce (1997) online on iFILM.
