Synopsis
Antonia's Line (Antonia, 1995) — watch online on iFILM — is a Dutch-Belgian drama directed by Marleen Gorris, tracing five generations of a matriarchal family across forty years of Dutch village life. Shortly after World War II, Antonia returns to her childhood home with her daughter Danielle, reclaims her mother's farm, and quietly builds something unusual: a community on her own terms.
Willeke van Ammelrooy plays Antonia with a worn, unhurried authority — she takes in unwed mothers, shelters eccentrics, and faces down the village bully without raising her voice. Each generation of women pushes a little further than the last. Danielle wants a child but no husband. Her daughter inherits a gift for mathematics. Her great-granddaughter arrives into a world Antonia spent a lifetime shaping. The men around them range from gentle (would-be suitor Bas) to grim (a rapist who gets the justice the law won't deliver), and Gorris treats all of it without sentiment or outrage — just clarity.
The film won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film in 1996. It's less a feminist manifesto than an honest chronicle of how stubborn decency compounds over generations. Stream Antonia's Line (1995) online on iFILM.
