I Am Mother

I Am Mother (2019) is Grant Sputore's sci-fi thriller you can watch online on iFILM. After humanity dies out, a robot called Mother raises a girl from a stored embryo inside a sealed underground bunker.

The Daughter (Clara Rugaard) has never known anything else. Beyond the walls, Mother says, the air is toxic and no human survives. The girl grows up on ethics lessons and the machine's careful attention, until a wounded stranger (Hilary Swank) pounds on the airlock and tells a very different story about the surface. Who is lying: the only family she has ever had, or the woman who calls Mother a killer?

Sputore's debut feature leans on three performances and rarely leaves the clean white corridors of the bunker. Rose Byrne voices Mother, while the robot itself is a practical suit worn by an actor rather than a CGI build. The film premiered at Sundance before Netflix picked it up.
