The Northman

The Northman (2022) is Robert Eggers' Viking revenge saga, and you can watch it online on iFILM. Late ninth century: young prince Amleth watches his uncle slaughter his father the king and seize his mother. The boy rows away across the sea, swearing he will return.

Years later Amleth (Alexander Skarsgard) has become a raiding berserker who burns villages for plunder. A rumor about where the killer Fjolnir (Claes Bang) settled drags him to Iceland, disguised among slaves. Beside him is Olga of the Birch Forest (Anya Taylor-Joy), a sorceress nursing her own designs. Nicole Kidman plays his mother Gudrun, Bjork a seer-witch, Willem Dafoe a deranged jester. Vengeance here is not noble. It reeks of mud, blood and old curses.

Eggers built the film from the same Norse legend that fed Shakespeare's Hamlet, obsessing over tenth-century weapons, rites and dialect.
