Synopsis

The Day of the Locust (1975) is an American drama you can watch online on iFILM, directed by John Schlesinger and adapted from Nathanael West's savage 1939 Hollywood novel. The cast includes Donald Sutherland, Karen Black, and Burgess Meredith.

Hollywood, 1930s. Tod Hackett arrives as a set designer and finds what the studio system hides behind the backlot glamour: a crowd of true believers ground down by a machine that never intended to give them anything. He becomes obsessed with Faye Greener, his neighbor and aspiring actress — a woman who radiates desire and offers nothing back. Around her orbit: her ailing father Harry, a faded vaudeville comic, and Homer, a gentle accountant willing to spend everything he has on someone who will never see him.

Schlesinger shot it as something deliberately uncomfortable — 145 minutes of a city eating its own dreamers alive. The final riot sequence remains one of the most unsettling crowd scenes in American film. Watch The Day of the Locust (1975) online on iFILM.
