Synopsis
The Miracle Worker (1962) is an American biographical drama you can watch online on iFILM. Director Arthur Penn adapted the stage play about Helen Keller and her teacher Annie Sullivan. Both Anne Bancroft and Patty Duke won Academy Awards for their performances — one of the very few times a film has produced two Oscar winners from its cast in a single year.
Helen is seven years old. A childhood illness left her unable to see or hear, and the years since have been one long, private fury. By the time twenty-year-old Annie Sullivan travels from Boston to Tuscumbia, Alabama, the Keller family has nearly given up. Annie is half-blind herself — her vision damaged by disease during years spent in a state institution — and she has no patience for the pity that surrounds Helen in that house.
Her method is repetitive and relentless: she spells letters into Helen's palm, again and again, until the morning at the water pump when the connection finally forms. The film captures that moment without sentiment — just water, a hand, and a word. Watch The Miracle Worker (1962) online on iFILM.
