Synopsis

Repulsion (1965) is Roman Polanski's psychological horror you can watch online on iFILM. A young manicurist named Carole (Catherine Deneuve) shares a London flat with her sister and can barely stand to be near men.

When her sister leaves for a holiday in Italy, Carole is left alone, and a few days behind a locked door erase the line between waking life and delusion. Cracks split open across the walls. Hands push out of the plaster to grab at her. The hallway seems to stretch and shrink. Polanski works almost without dialogue: his heroine says little, and the dread builds instead from dripping water, a ticking clock and the silence of empty rooms. Deneuve plays a mind coming apart so quietly and precisely that it gets under your skin.

This was the director's first English-language feature and the opening chapter of his "Apartment Trilogy," later joined by Rosemary's Baby and The Tenant. Shot in stark black and white, it shaped decades of films about confinement and unraveling sanity. The cinematographer was Gilbert Taylor, who would go on to shoot Star Wars.
