The Whale

The Whale (2022) is Darren Aronofsky's drama, available to watch online on iFILM. Brendan Fraser plays Charlie, an online writing teacher weighing close to 600 pounds who has not left his apartment in years.

Charlie runs his classes with the webcam switched off, lives on delivery food, and is quietly eating himself to death. His friend Liz, a nurse, is the only person who checks on him. When his blood pressure crosses into fatal territory and he refuses the hospital, Charlie spends what time he has left trying to reach Ellie, the teenage daughter he walked out on years ago. Sadie Sink plays her furious and unwilling to forgive.

Aronofsky shot almost the whole film inside four walls, like a stage play, the camera fixed on Charlie's face. Fraser won the Academy Award for Best Actor for the part, and the film also took the Oscar for makeup. A hard, honest story about guilt and the wish to be forgiven.
