Synopsis
The Last Battle (Le Dernier Combat, 1983) is Luc Besson's debut feature you can watch online on iFILM. Shot in black and white, almost entirely without dialogue — some catastrophe has stripped humanity of speech, leaving survivors to communicate through gesture alone.
The world that remains is rubble. Pierre Jolivet plays the Man, drifting through collapsed cities and a half-occupied psychiatric hospital, looking for something worth holding onto. Jean Reno — in one of his earliest roles — plays the Brute: wordless, physical, and dangerous precisely because there's nothing to negotiate.
Besson made this at 23 on almost no money. It works as a formal experiment and as a portrait of stripped-down brutality; the style-over-plot instinct that defines his later films starts right here. Milène Farmer appears in a small role — her screen debut. Watch The Last Battle (1983) online on iFILM.
