Synopsis

The Big Blue (Le Grand Bleu, 1988) is Luc Besson's hypnotic free-diving drama, and you can watch it online on iFILM. France, 168 minutes, scored by Éric Serra.

Two boys once raced each other into the water off a Greek island. Years later they meet again as rivals. Jacques Mayol (Jean-Marc Barr) can slow his heartbeat and breathing until his body reads more like a dolphin's than a man's. Enzo Molinari (Jean Reno) is loud, competitive, hungry for the world record in diving without air. Between them stands Joanna (Rosanna Arquette), an American insurance clerk who falls for Jacques and slowly realises the sea will always pull harder than she can.

Besson poured his own obsession with the ocean into the film, and the underwater silence does as much storytelling as the dialogue. It ran in French cinemas for over a year, turned into a genuine cult classic, and gave Éric Serra a career-defining score. The ending still splits viewers down the middle.
