A death in the family pulls three generations of the Deetz clan back to Winter River. Lydia (Winona Ryder) now makes a living talking to spirits on TV, but her world tips over when her teenage daughter Astrid (Jenna Ortega) stumbles on the old model town in the attic and tears open a doorway to the Afterlife. Say the name three times and the chaos starts all over. Catherine O'Hara returns, Willem Dafoe shows up as an afterlife cop, and Monica Bellucci plays the demon's vengeful ex-wife, stitched back together piece by piece.

Burton leaned on practical effects here: stop-motion, prosthetics, hand-built sets for the world of the dead. Danny Elfman scored it, just as he did in 1988.
