Synopsis
Miller's Crossing (1990) is a Coen Brothers crime drama you can watch online on iFILM. It's Prohibition, and an unnamed Eastern city runs on the say-so of Irish boss Leo. His cool-headed right-hand man, Tom Reagan, is played by Gabriel Byrne.
Tom whispers the smart moves, but loyalty buckles over a woman. Both he and Leo want Verna, given a sharp edge by Marcia Gay Harden. When the rival Italian, Caspar, demands Leo hand over Verna's slippery bookie brother Bernie, the two outfits slide into open war. Tom plays every angle at once, and you're never quite sure whose side he's on until the last reel. John Turturro, begging for his life on a wooded back road, delivers the film's most unforgettable scene.
Drawn loosely from Dashiell Hammett, the picture carries the Coens' dry wit and clipped, hard-boiled talk — and that hat tumbling through the trees. Albert Finney anchors it as the aging Leo, with a young Steve Buscemi turning up in a brief, fast-talking bit. A cold, exact study of trust and betrayal.
