Synopsis

Dave Chappelle's Block Party (2005) is a concert documentary you can watch online on iFILM. Directed by Michel Gondry, it captures a single September 2004 afternoon in Brooklyn — comedian Dave Chappelle threw a free outdoor show and invited the heaviest lineup in hip-hop: Kanye West, Mos Def, Talib Kweli, Erykah Badu, The Roots, Common, Jill Scott, and a surprise reunion of The Fugees with Lauryn Hill.

Chappelle handed out invitations to strangers on the street and bused in neighbors from his hometown in Ohio. What could have been a celebrity concert became something closer to a neighborhood cookout that happened to be historic. Gondry shoots it loose and warm, with as much time on the faces in the crowd as on the performers. For anyone who cares about where hip-hop stood before streaming flattened everything, this is essential footage. Watch Dave Chappelle's Block Party (2005) online on iFILM.
