Dreamgirls

Dreamgirls (2006) is Bill Condon's musical drama, available to watch online on iFILM. Adapted from the 1981 Broadway show, it follows a female soul trio from Detroit clawing their way onto the pop charts of the early 1960s.

Effie, Deena and Lorrell sing in clubs until a slick car salesman named Curtis Taylor Jr. takes them on. He polishes their sound, reshapes their look, and pushes them toward stardom, then quietly sidelines the powerhouse but unmarketable Effie in favor of the prettier Deena. Behind the sequins lie betrayals, broken hearts and the price of selling out your own voice. The cast brings together Jamie Foxx, Beyoncé, Eddie Murphy and Jennifer Hudson.

The story borrows from the rise of Motown and The Supremes, though the names and events are invented. Jennifer Hudson's screen debut earned her an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress, and her showstopper "And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going" became the film's signature moment.
