Finding Neverland

The film follows how playwright J.M. Barrie came to dream up Peter Pan. His latest London production has flopped and his imagination has gone quiet. Then, in a park, he befriends Sylvia, a young widow, and her four boys. The made-up pirates, the games, the afternoons spent pretending nobody has to grow up — all of it slowly turns into a story about a boy who never does. Barrie's marriage frowns on the friendship, and so does polite society, but he keeps slipping further into a world of his own making.

Adapted from Allan Knee's play The Man Who Was Peter Pan, the movie bends Barrie's real life toward feeling rather than fact. Jan A.P. Kaczmarek's score won the Academy Award, and it earns every note. Depp plays the writer softly, with none of his usual mischief, and the last act lands harder than any effect.
