Synopsis

Molly Maxwell (2013) is a Canadian coming-of-age drama you can watch online on iFILM, directed by Sara St. Onge. The setting is Phoenix Progressive School, where students lounge on parlor couches instead of sitting at desks and design their own curriculum around things like breakdancing and graphic novels. Everyone seems to have a gift. Sixteen-year-old Molly is not sure she has one.

Then her English teacher Ben walks in. Lola Tash plays Molly with an honesty that refuses to make the character either naive or calculating — she knows what she wants and does not pretend otherwise. Charlie Carrigan plays Ben, articulate and self-aware enough to know exactly where the line is, which makes it worse, not better, that he crosses it. Krista Bridges as Molly's mother provides the adult perspective that keeps the film from drifting into fantasy about what the relationship means.

St. Onge shoots without verdict — no villains, no tidy moral. The film is uncomfortable for the right reasons. Stream Molly Maxwell online on iFILM.
