Game designer Allegra Geller unveils her new virtual-reality system, which plugs straight into the spine through a living, fleshy bioport. During the demo, an assassin opens fire. On the run, Allegra talks a timid marketing trainee, Ted Pikul, into playing alongside her so she can test whether the last surviving game pod still works. The deeper they sink into eXistenZ, the harder it gets to tell where the game stops and the real danger begins.
