London, the early 1970s. A young man with a four-octave range and an outsider's swagger talks his way into a struggling band after a gig. That's how Queen begins: Mercury, guitarist Brian May (Gwilym Lee), drummer Roger Taylor (Ben Hardy) and bassist John Deacon (Joseph Mazzello). The film tracks the records, the tours and the fight over a six-minute song with no chorus that radio refused to play. It also follows the loneliness of a man adored by stadiums while drifting from the people closest to him. Lucy Boynton plays Mary Austin, the love Freddie never stopped naming.
