Gangster Squad

Gangster Squad (2013) is a crime thriller you can watch online on iFILM, directed by Ruben Fleischer. In late-1940s Los Angeles, the man who really runs the city isn't the mayor — it's a Brooklyn-bred ex-boxer named Mickey Cohen.

Cohen (Sean Penn) owns the dope, the wire bets and the brothels, plus enough cops and politicians to stay untouchable on paper. Arresting him through the courts is a dead end. So Sgt. John O'Mara (Josh Brolin) quietly recruits a handful of officers willing to leave their badges at home and fight Cohen the way he fights. One of them is the slick Jerry Wooters (Ryan Gosling), who has his own reason to get close: Cohen's girl, Grace (Emma Stone). Nick Nolte, Anthony Mackie, Giovanni Ribisi and Michael Peña fill out the unit.

The plot takes loose inspiration from the real LAPD crusade to break the city's rackets at the turn of the decade. Fleischer plays it as glossy noir — sharp suits, neon, shootouts staged like classic Hollywood. The polish never quite hides the blood, and the law only works from the shadows.
