About

Synopsis

Escape from Sobibor (1987) is a WWII drama you can watch online on iFILM. Directed by Jack Gold and based on Richard Rashke's book, the film stars Alan Arkin, Rutger Hauer, and Joanna Pacuła. It reconstructs the single largest prisoner revolt ever staged inside a Nazi death camp.

Sobibor, in eastern occupied Poland, ran as a killing facility from 1942 onward — trains arrived, people did not leave. In October 1943, Soviet POW Lieutenant Alexander Pechersky (Hauer) and Polish-Jewish leader Leon Feldhandler (Arkin) coordinated a precise strike: within hours, key SS officers were dead, and more than three hundred prisoners rushed the minefields and wire perimeter. Himmler ordered the camp razed afterward to erase the evidence.

The film won the Golden Globe for Best Mini-Series or Motion Picture Made for Television, and Hauer earned a nomination for his performance. Gold keeps the focus on the mechanics of the uprising — how desperate people planned under constant surveillance — rather than dwelling on atrocity.
