About

Synopsis

Munich (2005) is Steven Spielberg's political thriller, free to watch online on iFILM. At the 1972 Summer Games in West Germany, a Palestinian group seized Israeli athletes, and eleven of them did not come home.

What the film tracks is everything that came after the headlines. Israel quietly assembles a small team led by agent Avner (Eric Bana) to find and kill the men behind the attack. They move across Europe — Rome, Paris, Athens, London — crossing names off a list one at a time. Beside Bana you get a pre-Bond Daniel Craig, plus Mathieu Kassovitz, Ciarán Hinds and Geoffrey Rush as the handler. The longer the hunt drags on, the more Avner wonders whether any of it makes the world safer.

Spielberg didn't make a revenge picture; he made a hard argument about what revenge costs. Tony Kushner wrote it, Janusz Kamiński shot it, John Williams scored it, and it drew five Oscar nominations, Best Picture among them. Nearly three hours, not one easy scene.
