Battleground

Battleground (1949) is an MGM war film you can watch online on iFILM. Director William A. Wellman — himself a World War I veteran — follows a squad from the U.S. Army's 101st Airborne Division pinned down near Bastogne, Belgium, in December 1944. No ammunition. No air cover. Fog everywhere, and German pressure on every side.

Van Johnson, John Hodiak, Ricardo Montalbán, James Whitmore and Richard Jaeckel lead a cast of soldiers who've already been through too much and know there's more coming. The film runs 118 minutes in black and white, and won two Academy Awards — Best Film Editing and Best Cinematography. It leans into the cold, the waiting and the small cruelties of attrition rather than heroic set-pieces.
