Ronin

Ronin (1998) is John Frankenheimer's hard-edged action thriller, and you can watch it online on iFILM. The Cold War is over, but the spies it trained still need work. In Paris, a cool Irish handler hires a crew of freelance operatives for one job: grab a briefcase that half of Europe seems willing to kill for.

Nobody knows what's inside the case, and the film never tells you. That's the point. Ex-CIA man Sam (Robert De Niro) trusts no one on the team, which turns out to be smart. Beside him are a sharp French fixer named Vincent (Jean Reno), a jittery tech guy, the go-between Deirdre (Natascha McElhone), and several men running their own angles. At least one of them is playing both sides.

Frankenheimer shot the car chases for real through Nice and Paris, no CGI, cars roaring the wrong way down packed streets, and people still rank them among the best ever filmed. The cast also includes Stellan Skarsgard, Sean Bean and Jonathan Pryce. Stream Ronin (1998) online on iFILM.
