Devotion

At its center is Jesse Brown, the first Black aviator to complete the US Navy's flight training. Flying over Korea, he and his wingman Tom Hudner become more than partners — they become close friends. On the ground, Brown carries insults and slights his white squadmates never have to. When his plane goes down behind enemy lines and the brass sees no reason to mount a rescue, Hudner makes his own call, orders be damned.

The film grows out of Adam Makos's book and the memories of people who were there, and the dogfights were shot with real Corsairs rather than leaning on computer effects. Majors plays Brown quietly, through silences and a steady gaze instead of speeches. It's a film about the price of keeping a promise, set in a conflict America mostly chose to forget.
