Close Encounters of the Third Kind

Richard Dreyfuss plays an ordinary husband and father unraveled by a brief brush with something not of this world. Meanwhile scientists track a repeating signal, and aircraft lost back in 1945 turn up intact. Melinda Dillon searches for her abducted son, and French director Francois Truffaut appears as the researcher chasing the contacts.

Spielberg made a film about the pull of the unknown, where the visitors arrive to invite rather than destroy. The climax at Devils Tower, with its five-note musical exchange, became one of the most recognizable scenes in the genre, and Vilmos Zsigmond won an Oscar for the cinematography.
