Synopsis
Caged Heat (1974) is the feature directorial debut of Jonathan Demme — watch it online on iFILM. A young woman convicted on drug charges is sent to a women's penitentiary run by a cold, authoritarian warden named McQueen. The facility's doctor, Randolph, runs a parallel operation: sedating inmates and subjecting them to electroshock sessions that have nothing to do with medicine.
The women arrive as strangers with no reason to trust one another. A shared enemy makes quick work of that distance. The cast includes Juanita Brown, Roberta Collins, Erica Gavin and Barbara Steele, all working within a 83-minute runtime and the strict economics of Roger Corman's New World Pictures.
Demme made this inside Corman's production machine — tight schedule, minimal budget, maximum invention. The women-in-prison formula gave him cover to do something the genre rarely bothered with: treat the inmates as people with distinct histories rather than interchangeable victims. That instinct would define his later work on The Silence of the Lambs and Philadelphia. Caged Heat is worth watching as exploitation cinema that already had a conscience.
