Synopsis

Freud's Last Session (2023) — watch online on iFILM: a British-Irish-American drama directed by Matt Brown, starring Anthony Hopkins as Sigmund Freud and Matthew Goode as C.S. Lewis, the writer who would later give the world Narnia. Two men. One room. A war starting outside the window.

September 3, 1939 — the day Britain entered the conflict. Freud, terminally ill and near the end, receives an unexpected visitor: Lewis, a decades-younger Oxford don who had wrestled his way from atheism to Christianity. Their conversation ranges across God's existence, the roots of belief, and the purpose of suffering. Neither man has much patience for easy answers. Neither backs down.

The screenplay adapts Mark St. Germain's stage play, which draws on the documented correspondence between Freud and Lewis even as the meeting itself remains speculative. Hopkins plays Freud as dry, precise, and unsparing; Goode brings a restless energy to Lewis that keeps the intellectual duel from ever feeling static.
