About

Synopsis

The Age of Innocence (1993) is Martin Scorsese's period romance you can watch online on iFILM. It unfolds in the drawing rooms of 1870s New York high society, where every dinner and every glove carries the weight of an unwritten rulebook.

Newland Archer (Daniel Day-Lewis), a successful young lawyer, is engaged to the flawless May Welland (Winona Ryder). His future is mapped out for decades. Then May's cousin, Countess Ellen Olenska (Michelle Pfeiffer), comes back to the city, trailing a marital scandal behind her. Newland is meant to help the family quiet the gossip; instead he falls for her. What follows is not a loud affair but a slow war between desire and decorum, fought through glances, silences and seating charts rather than open words.

The film is adapted from Edith Wharton's Pulitzer-winning novel. Scorsese, the man behind brutal gangster dramas, surprised everyone with his most restrained work and won an Academy Award for its costumes. Joanne Woodward's narration studies the rituals of this gilded world like an anthropologist. Stream The Age of Innocence (1993) online on iFILM.
