About

Synopsis

Swept from the Sea (1998) is a British romantic drama you can watch online on iFILM, directed by Biban Kidron and starring Rachel Weisz, Vincent Perez, and Ian McKellen.

Late nineteenth-century England. Yanko Goorall washes ashore as the sole survivor of a shipwreck — foreign, penniless, speaking no English, and utterly incomprehensible to the community that finds him. The village responds with suspicion and contempt. Only Amy Foster, a servant girl who has long been an outsider in her own home, chooses to see a person instead of a threat. Dr. James Kennedy, played by McKellen, watches from a careful distance and tells the story in retrospect, already knowing how it ends. The screenplay draws on Joseph Conrad's short story of the same name.

Kidron makes a romance that refuses comfort: the love between Yanko and Amy is real, but the world around them is indifferent and occasionally cruel, and the film never pretends otherwise. Stream Swept from the Sea (1998) online on iFILM.
