Synopsis

Sisters Gudrun and Ursula grow up in a grimy English coal-mining town and want more than the place can offer. Gudrun falls into a turbulent affair with Gerald, a cold and driven colliery heir who has everything except the capacity to feel. Ursula is drawn to Rupert Birkin, a schoolteacher who has grown tired of convention and keeps searching for a bond he cannot quite name. Both couples are torn between desire and the fear of real intimacy — and the film refuses to let anyone off easily.
